Age: 10-13
Python for kids
Programming step by step with Bajtek the robot
A course for beginners aged about 10-13. Every lesson is one new idea, a video, colourful animations and automatically checked tasks.
Module 1
First steps
Printing on the screen, calculating, variables and reading input.
Installing Python on your computer
You'll install Python from python.org/downloads and run your first program on your own computer.
Your first program
You'll write your first program that prints text on the screen and send it to the judge.
Text and numbers in print
You'll tell text from numbers and print several things on one line.
Adding, subtracting, multiplying
You'll use Python as a calculator: add, subtract and multiply even very big numbers.
Whole numbers, numbers with a dot and text
You'll meet three kinds of values: whole numbers, numbers with a dot and text - and see how they differ.
Division: / // %
You'll divide numbers in three ways: exactly, without remainder, and get just the remainder.
Comments - notes for people
You'll add comments that Python skips to your code and learn to switch lines off with #.
Text: joining and repeating
You'll join text with a plus and repeat it with a star - and draw a tree, stairs and a frame that way.
sep and end in print
You'll change what print puts between the values (sep) and what it prints at the end of the line (end).
Special characters: \\ \" \n
You'll print a backslash, a quote inside text and a new line - using special characters.
Order of operations and powers
You'll know what Python calculates first and use brackets and powers.
Variables - labelled boxes
You'll store numbers and text in variables and calculate with them.
Changing a variable
You'll change a variable's value: increase it, decrease it and swap two variables.
Errors - reading the messages
You'll read an error message, find the line with the mistake and fix it.
input() - reading text
Your program will read text from the input and use it in its answer.
type() - what type is a value?
You'll meet the types str, int and float and learn to check them with type().
Changing types: str(), int(), float()
You'll turn text into a number, a number into text, and meet numbers with a dot.
input() - reading a number
You'll read a number, turn it from text into a number and calculate with it.
Module 1 summary: First steps
You'll go over everything from Module 1 - print, calculating, text, variables, errors and reading input - and put it together in tasks.
Module 2
Decisions - the program chooses
Comparisons, True and False, if, else and elif, and, or and not - the program does different things for different data.
Comparisons: greater, less, equal
You'll ask Python a question about two numbers and get the answer True or False.
True and False
You'll store the answer to a question in a variable and meet the bool type.
if - when the condition is true
You'll write a program that runs lines only when a condition is true.
if and else - one of two
You'll write a program that always picks one of two roads: if or else.
elif - many options
You'll write a program with many roads and understand why the order of the conditions matters.
Divisibility - % in conditions
You'll check whether a number divides by another with no remainder, and recognise even numbers.
and, or, not - joining conditions
You'll join several conditions into one: all at once (and), at least one (or) or the other way round (not).
An if inside an if
You'll ask a second question only when the answer to the first one is True.
Comparing text
You'll check a password and a command, and put words in alphabetical order.
Checking the data - before we calculate
You'll set up a guard: the program first checks the data and only then calculates - and doesn't crash.
Mistakes in ifs
You'll find and fix mistakes in ifs - including the ones that give no message at all.
Contest tasks with conditions
You'll solve real contest tasks: list all the cases and test every road of the program.
Module 2 summary: Decisions
You'll go over the whole module and solve tasks that combine comparisons, ifs, and/or and the helpers.
